Frequently asked questions

How does scanning a product work?

Point your camera at a product's barcode. We first look it up on Open Food Facts; if it isn't registered there, Gemini (Google's AI) identifies the product via web search instead. Either way, we then generate (or retrieve a cached) AI safety analysis of its ingredients.

Why is a product's analysis cached instead of re-run every time?

Once a product has been analyzed, we keep the result for up to six months. This gives you an instant answer and avoids re-running the AI analysis unnecessarily for the same product.

Where does the ingredient data come from?

For most products, data comes from Open Food Facts, a free, community-maintained, open product database — not generated by AI. If a product isn't registered there, Gemini (Google's AI) identifies it via web search instead; in that case the product details are AI-identified rather than sourced from Open Food Facts, and may be less reliable.

What if a product is missing or the information looks wrong?

Since product data comes from the community-maintained Open Food Facts database, listings can occasionally be missing, outdated, or incorrect. You can help improve it by editing the product directly on openfoodfacts.org, or contact us and we'll look into it.
